MYELIN BASIC PROTEIN

There are sixty thousand miles of nerves traveling throughout our body all of which are covered by Myelin Sheath, a protective coating much like the protective coating of an electrical cord. The myelin sheath is sixty layers thick and its’ main purpose along with protecting the nerve cells are to increase the speed at which impulses travel along the nerve fiber.

Many factors contribute to a process known as demyelination of nerve cells. Demyelination is any condition that results in damage to the myelin. Heavy Metals, Chemicals, Inflammation all contribute to this process but none more significantly then elevated Cortisol.

Demyelination
Stress acts as the trigger. Even though the causes of stress can be non-specific (physiological or psychological) the effect on the endocrine system triggers the fight or flight reaction (adrenaline) as if thrown in front of a speeding train. With adrenaline you get its tag team partner cortisol. Chronically elevated cortisol eats at the myelin sheath peeling away layer after layer.

Ounce the myelin sheath has been damaged and the nerve fiber is exposed a large host of viruses which travel the nervous system can now express themselves. These can include many in the herpes family of viruses including Psoriasis, Eczema and Shingles.

A large segment of the population carry the psoriasis virus, so why isn’t everyone walking around with flaky, itchy, skin? The answer is myelin. Which also explains why psoriasis, as well as eczema are so random in where the symptoms develop, where ever there are breaks in the myelin sheath.

MS - Multiple Sclerosis
Demyelination is the major underlying factor responsible for the symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS). When axions become demyelinated, the action potential (potential of electrochemical mechanism to transmit nerve impulses) transmits nerve impulses much slower than normal myelinated axons.

Lose of myelin causes nerve impulses to slow down as well as miss- fire. This in turn interrupts the central nervous system (CNS) affecting visual, Motor, Sensory, Coordination, Bowel, Bladder, Sexual and Cognitive function.

Conclusion

The good news is that myelin is one of the fastest replicating cells of the body. However the body does not make the nutrients necessary to rebuild myelin and must get them from an outside source. Myelin protein is the critical nutrient that must be available in abundance facilitate the building and repair of the myelin sheath. Once the myelin is repaired the protection is now in place to prevent many of the conditions mentioned above from expressing themselves.

How To Take Supplements

We live by the laws called chemistry and understanding how that chemistry works plays a major role in our health and well-being. The body only recognizes molecular structures and these molecules fall into three categories determined by their molecular weight.
The body is far more interested in how it can access a molecule than what it is. This is why the vast majority of people who take supplements receive little or no benefit from them. I would like to have a dollar for every time someone has said to me "Oh I took that and it did nothing for me" and I ask them how and when they took it which of course was completely wrong. When I then tell them they had a better chance of getting hit by lightning then getting a benefit from the way they were taking it the response is always "Well I took it when it was convenient for me." The body could care less about what is convenient for you but requires that everything you ingest conform to its ability to absorb it.

As such nutrients can be broken into three categories:

 1) Water Soluble - Those that need to be taken on an empty stomach with water or juice depending on what they are.
 2) Large Molecular Structures - Those that need to be taken with food (digested)
 3) Fat Soluble - Those that need to be taken during the digestive process (two hours after)

MORNING - WATER SOLUBLE NUTRIENTS

This group of nutrients have a very small (molecular weight) and can be represented as the size of a head of a pin. In fact they are so small they need a larger sugar molecule to latch onto to carry them into the blood stream. Take this group first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with a non-acid juice waiting 30 minutes before the consumption of food.

This group can include antioxidants and immune factors that arm the immune system and support it throughout the day. This is also when you take other water soluble nutrients that build and repair the joint structures of the body including soft tissue, connective tissue, & collagen including free form amino acids, as well as B and C vitamins.

BEFORE LUNCH - GI TRACK MAINTENANCE

Taking probiotics and gastrointestinal tract (specific) nutrients allows for the recolonization of the intestinal micro-flora or friendly bacteria that protect the intestinal and mucosal tissues. At the same time I recommend taking a number of constitutional nutrients that feed and rebuild the intestinal lumen (lining) along with the entire GI Tract. Nutrients such as colostrum provide immunoglobulins in mucus secretions that line the hollow organs of the body acting as our first line of defense against foreign invaders. Butric acid helps heal the gastro-mucous (lining of stomach in the small and large intestine. Larch arabinogalactan (Larix) helps to stimulate the proliferation of Bifidobacteria in the Large Intestine.

These are also water soluble nutrients that need to be taken on an empty stomach with water waiting 30 minutes before the consumption of food. This class of nutrients do not require a sugar molecule for absorption in fact it interferes with absorption.

LUNCH - LARGE MOLECULAR STRUCTURES

This group of molecules are very large and can be represented as the size of a golf ball. The digestive process is required for the body to access them. The only thing that triggers digestion is protein. Digestion means that meal will sit in the stomach for two hours. After two hours the food empties into the first stage of the small intestine (duodenum) were the pancreas delivers 50,000 enzymes to reduce these golf balls to a size the body can assimilate.

Included in this group are  minerals, (like calcium) metals and herbs.  Also taking a digestive enzyme formula with all the pancreatic mimics helps aid the digestive process. Take with food that requires digestion (protein).

This meal should be at lunch time when the body is running at its metabolic peak. Digestion is the hardest job the body will perform in a day, fifty percent of the body's energy will go just to make it happen.

The most important aspect to keep in mind is to avoid simple sugars. Sugar in any form (artificial sweeteners, fructose and fruit) will stop digestion in its tracks. Sugar tells the pancreas no digestion required, do not send the 50,000 enzymes to complete the digestive process leaving you with no realized nutritional benefit from that meal as well as the supplements you took with it.

One last point is drinking fluids with lunch. Limiting your water to 12 ounces during this meal prevents over hydration which can  dilute enzymatic activity.

AFTER LUNCH - FAT SOLUBLE NUTRIENTS

Fatty acid (Oils) absorption must be part of the digestive process. Their absorption into the body takes place in the small intestine so you want to introduce them into the stomach just as it is getting ready to pass its  contents into the duodenum (first stage of the small intestine). For this reason take fat soluble based nutrients two hours after lunch (protein meal) and waiting at least an hour after taking oils before the consuming of sugar so it does not interfere with digestion.

Essential Fatty Acids in this group would include Vitamin E, Omega 3-6-9.  Also included would be CoQ10, Carotenoids, Phosphatidylcholine and other Phospholipids from lecithin. Vitamin A and D and other oil based nutrients.

UBIQUINOL

There are 200 different cell types the make up the body, 199 of them use glucose to fund their energy molecule ATP. The heart is the only cell type that does not use glucose to fund its energy; it relies on CoQ10 or its reduced form Ubiquinol.

Ubiquinol is the reduced active form of CoQ10.

Normally the conversion process from CoQ10 to Ubiquinol occurs naturally in the body but this process becomes less efficient with aging and the loss of the enzyme needed to make this conversion possible

Ubiquinol is found in all body tissue, but the highest concentrations are found in the heart muscle. The Heart's Ubiquinol levels decline with the Aging Process.

Ubiquinol may benefit most cardiovascular conditions including arrhythmia, prevention of atherosclerosis and cardiomyopathy (approximately 62% of cardiovascular disease patients are found to be deficient in Ubiquinol). Congestive heart failure (CHF) and many CHF patients are found to exhibit an Ubiquinol deficiency. Ubiquinol may normalize Heart function in mitral valve prolapse patients. Ubiquinol may also help to prevent Stroke and help prevent

As free radical scavenger, Ubiquinol reduces the load on the immune system and preserves immune response for more important tasks of repair and rebuilding. As such it contributes to both B-Cell immunity increasing production of protective antibodies and T-Cell immunity increasing production of specific T-Cells.
Ubiquinol contributes so much to cell performance, the benefits including almost every aspect from fatty acid metabolism to insulin sensitivity to electron transport to oxygen utilization.

The immune system benefits from Ubiquinol by protecting cell integrity and reducing free radical damage. This can prevent and reverse aspects of the Aging Process (including  Aging within the Brain). Ubiquinol may reverse accelerated Apoptosis of Cells involved in the Aging Process (this means that Ubiquinol may as a life extension agent slow or even reverse the accelerated death of cells).

Glucosamine Sulfate & MSM

Statistically we will lose three inches of height by the time we are eighty. We have all seen our grandparents shrink. Bones don't shrink it's the loss of soft tissue between the bones. The good news is that soft tissue is the third fastest replicating cell type of the body. The body must have these key nutrients available to make this chemistry possible.

Glucosamine Sulfate - Purchase Click Here
Building Block of Soft Tissue

Glucosamine Sulfate is an amino sugar (aminomonosaccharide) formed from glucose and the amino acid, glutamine. The body uses amino sugars to form the synovial membranes, ligaments and cartilage which make up all the joint structures of the body.

Glucosamine sulfate and MSM (a sulfur molecule) build mucopolysaccarides and chondroitin molecules.

Supplementing with chondroitin is not effective, it is a finished molecule. This would be like putting a finished product back on an assembly line. The body can only build chondroitin molecules and has no way of using a finished chondroitin molecule taken orally in supplement form.

MSM (Methyl-Sulfonyl-Methane) - Purchase Click Here
Activates Glucosamine

MSM is a highly reactive sulfur molecule that is used to activate glucosamine sulfate. Without MSM available the body cannot go on to build chondroitin and mucopolysaccaride molecules rendering glucosamine sulfate useless.

MSM contributes to the repair of the collagen matrix of the skin (wrinkling). The benefits are smoother and more supple skin.

MSM is also used to reduce inflammation associated with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and injuries.

TRANS-RESVERATROL

Researchers have determined that resveratrol has the ability to extend the lives of yeast, worms, fruit flies, certain species of fish, and obese mice up to 70%, 29%, 24%, 50%, and 31% respectively (depending on the amount of resveratrol given).

Resveratrol is a phytoalexin produced by a number of plants, apparently for its antifungal properties. It is found in widely varying amounts of grapes (primarily the skins); raspberries, mulberries, blueberries, bilberries and cranberries. It has benefical health effects, such as anti-cancer, anti-viral, neuroprotective, anti-aging, anti-inflammatory and life-prolonging effects.

The exact answer is not known but a widely asserted theory is that resveratrol activates an enzyme that is present in the bodies of many living organisms called sirtuin 2 (or SIR2). SIR2 is believed to extend cell life by 'coercing' cells to repair themselves (i.e. repair their DNA while increasing the production of protective antioxidants) as opposed to dying. In essence, it is believed resveratrol extends the lives of individual cells and the lives of the 'host' organisms are extended as a result.
Caloric Restriction

Interestingly, SIR2 is also activated by the practice of caloric restriction (reducing the calories in a 'normal' diet by around 40% while still consuming the necessary vitamins and minerals a body needs; that is, replacing high calorie foods with low calorie nutrient rich foods). Science has proven that calorie restriction increases the lives of organisms such as mice while significant health benefits have been observed in monkeys and humans - studies are underway to determine if calorie restriction extends the lives of monkeys and humans - many in the scientific community are optimistic that it does.

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION: When purchasing Resveratrol make sure it is in it's active form which is the Trans Factor which requires a low oxygen environment. If left exposed to oxygen Trans-Resveratrol converts to the inactive Cis-Form which now makes it a good antioxidant but offers no anti-aging benefit.

LYSINE - BUILDING BLOCK OF COLLAGEN

LYSINE is one of the most abundant amino acids in the body, with anywhere from a pound to a pound and a half in the average person. This amount is huge in terms of the body considering most nutrient requirements are miniscule by comparison. The reason for this is we need a lot of collagen.

Lysine is the building block of collagen and along with the amino acid PROLINE, makes up eighty percent of the body's connective tissue (ligaments & tendons)  forty percent of skin and forty percent of the sixty thousand miles of vascularity which is also collagen. Proline is not an essential amino acid, meaning the body can produce it on its own, but typically not in sufficient quantities to meet the body's needs.

VITAMIN C is the other big player in the production of collagen and works in concert with lysine and proline as the glue or matrix on which collagen strands build. This process to which vitamin C contributes is known as hydroxylation.

Remember,  collagen is the glue that holds everything together from our gums to our bones. As we age we lose on average 1.5% of our body's collagen every year after the age of 30. Collagen is such an easy cell for the body to build, but without getting significant amounts of lysine into the body daily and it's supporting cast, proline and vitamin C, these cells literally begin to starve to death as our skin, vascular system and tendons lose their elasticity and integrity.

LYSINE

Lysine is not only the building block of collagen which is once again eighty percent of our connective tissue, it also helps protect this same soft tissue from the body's own immune response in the case of chronic inflammation. Sometimes the body's own defense system works too well. Chronic inflammation triggers an immune response, whereby, specific immune cells (macrophages) are released to suppress the inflammatory response when it has gone on too long.

Athletes, job related repetitive stress injuries or, anything that causes daily inflammation, cause the body to recognize this as something attacking it; then it attacks back. This causes the macrophages to release collagen-dissolving enzymes (collagenase) to address the inflammation and in the process consume collagen rich connective tissue, ultimately reducing the joint to bone on bone which is the genesis of arthritis.

CARDIOVASCULAR

Cardiovascular disease is a good example of a different type of response to inflammation. Low density lipoproteins (LDL), when elevated in the blood stream cause lesions or cuts in the vascular wall. The vascular wall becomes inflamed in this process triggering the production of smooth muscle cells that produce collagen dissolving enzymes (collagenase).

At the same time fibrogen, the clotting factor in blood, tries to repair the lesions by sealing tears from inside the vascular wall, much like it stops a cut from bleeding. The environment is now created for arterial plaque to begin forming. Fibrogen attracts anything that is floating in the bloodstream like calcium or fatsand begins forming atherosclerotic (calcified) or thrombotic (fatty) plaque.

Lysine with proline acts to inhibit collagen-dissolving enzymes and maintain the integrity of the vascular wall., while vitamin C acts to lower blood levels of LDL.

COLLAGEN-DISSOLVING ENZYMES & CANCER/VIRUSES

The uncontrolled replication or metastasis of cancer cells is made possible in the same way viruses proliferate by using a collagen-dissolving enzyme called collagenase.  Collagenase provides a docking mechanism for cancer and viruses to penetrate healthy cells.  In this manner cancer cells from the primary cancer site or tumor can spread throughout the body.

The way to stop collagenase is with an enzyme blocking agent, the most effective being Lysine. Supplementing with therapeutic amounts of lysine prevents collagenase from providing an entry point into healthy cells.

Embrace Lysine, Proline and Vitamin C as an integral part of your daily protocol. The benefits cross over into so many areas from anti-aging to preventing cancer and viruses from proliferating to heart and cardiovascular disease.

Remember that these are the building blocks of collagen. Eighty percent of the body's connective tissue, forty percent of skin and vascularity.. This is what degrades significantly as we age and why our skin, vascular system and tendons lose elasticity and integrity.

Richard Helfrich

COGNITIVE NUTRITION

ENHANCING THE MIND:

Cognitive Nutrition is a scientifically-designed supplement containing DMAE.  DMAE is a nutrient that will support brain function such as the ability to acquire new memories.

It protects and restores brain function through its ability to prevent inadequate oxygen (hypoxia) damage.  By increasing oxygen and energy (glucose) the memory becomes more clear and the thinking becomes sharper.
DMAE can dissolve amyloid plaque. This cellular debris builds up in the cells of the brain ultimately compromising communication between the cells contributing to the complications of Alzheimer's disease.
DMAE increases the acetylcholine level in the brain and body.  By increasing acetylcholine levels vasopressin (a choline precursor in the brain) is released.  Vasopresson is a memory learning chemical that regulates motor function and the nervous system sensory response.
It also forms the nerve connections we require to develop new memories, which have been lost in ageing.

THE SKIN:
The cells of the skin consist of sixty percent fat and forty percent collagen.  It is the high fat content that makes the skin so vulnerable to oxidative stress from the external environment.  In fact every cell of the skin gets on average 10,000 free radical hits per day.  It is like one man holding off an army of 10,000 hired soldiers each day.
One of the big culprits receiving much deserved attention today is of course the sun. Our body's natural defense, the melanin barrier is breached within a few hours of sun exposure and will not form for three days leaving the cells at the mercy of the sun.
Overexposure of the suns rays causes cellular debris (lipofuscin) to build up in the cells of the skin.
Lipofuscin can take up a great percentage of cell volume interrupting cell machinery and ultimately destroying the cell or turning it necrotic (cancerous).

DMAE protects the skin from the UV rays of the sun by acting in place of melanin.

DMAE not only acts as a shield for the skin against the sun it also can dissolve lipofuscin, the cellular debris which we recognize as an age spot or liver spot.
